The Beginning

The inaugural meeting was held at the home of George Marsh, who would later become the first Commodore of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.

A Premier Yacht Club is Born

GPYC Harbor and Clubhouse construction begins in 1928. The spoils dredged from the lake bottom to deepen the Harbor were reused to create the landfill on which the Clubhouse sits today. Construction of the Clubhouse, despite its massive size and landmark bell tower, was completed in just sixteen months.

The Grand Opening

On July 4, 1929, the Club held its grand opening marked with great fanfare and most of the Club's two hundred- plus members in attendance.

Boom, Bust and Recovery

Although the Club closed in 1935 due to bankruptcy, it reopened in 1938 as the effects of the Depression began to ease. The new Grosse Pointe Yacht Club was formally incorporated in May 1938 under the leadership of Commodore George Slocum, Rear Commodore and Treasurer H. Lynn Pierson, and Secretary Ward H. Peck.

Before, During and After the War

In February 1940, the four bowling lanes were completed and officially opened for play. Thanks to the generosity of four members, funds were donated to provide lockers for the bowlers

A Modern Yacht Club Takes Shape

In 1959 the Board sought approval for several new projects including the extension and enclosure of the Binnacle, a new seawall to the East and the South and added an extension to the East Lawn.

The Centennial Year

Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and its members proudly commemorated the Centennial year with elevated renditions of its cherished traditions, including the Commodores Ball and Fleet Review. In honor of this milestone, Past Commodore James L. Ramsey, alongside Club Historian Dr. Larry W. Stephenson, authored an extensive and meticulously crafted Centennial Book.
